Art Meditation – Experience Art in a New Way
Art meditation is a calm and mindful way to experience art.
Each of us is unique, and that’s why art and art meditation appear slightly different to each person. Art meditation gives you the opportunity to pause, take a breath in the midst of everyday life, and dive deep into the world of a work of art—and, at the same time, into your own inner world.
Art meditation is a clearly guided process lasting about 30 minutes that’s easy to follow. You don’t need any prior experience with meditation or knowledge of art—an open mind and curiosity are all you need.
Where does art meditation work best?
Art meditation is particularly well-suited to art exhibitions where the works are large enough and allow for a variety of interpretations (for example, abstract art, or works that feature details, shapes, colors, and textures)
The experience is best enjoyed in a peaceful setting where no other activities are taking place at the same time. For this reason, art meditation is usually scheduled outside of the exhibition’s regular opening hours, either before it opens or after it closes. People participate by sitting comfortably. Ideally, there should be chairs for all participants in the space.
Schedule and Overall Structure
It’s a good idea to reserve a little over an hour for a single art meditation session. In addition to the art meditation itself (about 30 minutes), the session includes a brief introduction at the beginning and a group discussion at the end, during which participants who wish to do so can share their experiences.
Here's how Art Meditation began
Art Meditation began in the summer of 2019, when I combined two things I love: experiencing art and meditation. The method emerged as I listened to my inner guidance, and it was first tried out at Marita Liulia’s exhibition at Laukon Kartano that same summer. The feedback was immediately very encouraging.
After the COVID-19 pandemic, Art Meditations have continued at venues such as Galleria Ronga in Tampere, and the journey toward art and inner experience continues in new exhibition spaces.
